The gutter will get enough space for the for binding methods (perfect binding, sewn binding, hardcover, etc.) especially for printing books with pages over 500pp+
Example:
If your normal page margins are:
Top: 10mm
Bottom: 10mm
Outside: 10mm
Your inside (gutter) margin might need to be: 10-15 mm (especially for thicker books). The thicker the book, the larger the gutter margin usually needs to be.

Extra Tip for Authors & Designers:
For paperback (perfect bound) books → increase gutter about 10mm.
For hardcover sewn books → you can sometimes use slightly smaller gutter about 8mm
For workbooks or books with full-page images, gutter planning is even more critical.
